Top tips for a clean office desk
Having a clean office desk could advance your career.
Office employees could well have just the reason they need to keep their desk tidy – it could lead to a promotion in your job.
A survey by OfficeTeam quizzed 500 managers at different locations of 20 or more workers, with 83% of them stating that they linked desk cleanliness to professionalism.
The figures break down into 18% of bosses saying it greatly affects their view of the office workers while 65% state that they are ‘somewhat affected’ by the messiness and scruffiness of a worker’s desk.
Below there are some suggestions which may help workers keep their desks clean and possibly move ahead in the competitive world of office work.
The obvious suggestion is to make sure the office space around you is visually pleasing. Not only will it make you feel better first thing in the morning but it will also look professional if visitors are present.
You should decide on a style which really suits you, even if it means your organizational style is completely at odds with the rest of your office.
It is also best to file papers, regardless of what is written on them. A filing cabinet or chest of drawers is the best place for these, however, if the office is small then it may be best to pass them on to other staff.
Another tip is to move any non-essential work away from your desk, even it is only moved to the back of your cubicle. The only work which needs to be on your desk is what is currently needed.
Whilst the paperless theory is just that at the moment, there are ways to cut down, for example saving things to your computer and mkaing desktop notes as opposed to using vast quantities of paper.
If paper is required then it is a good idea to straighten all of the paper you have on your desk before leaving for lunch and before the end of every day.
