Chicago leads the world of skyscrapers
A recent report shows that three of the world’s tallest buildings are in the United States. The survey conducted by Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat also shows that there are more buildings over 656 ft tall in Chicago than anywhere else in the world.
The report follows January’s unveiling of the worlds tallest skyscraper the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The 2,717 ft tall skyscraper was designed by Chicago based architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and former partner Adrian Smith. However the new super-skyscraper did not feature in the survey due to it not being finished during the time of calculations.
Recent Chicago skyscrapers include the Trump International Hotel & Tower, the tallest US building since the Sears tower, and Aqua- a unique skyscraper with undulating balconies. Trump took first place in the survey at 1,389 feet, the Bank of America Tower in New York came in second and Aqua in Chicago was fifth.
The council noted that China is still a powerful new center for skyscrapers and tall buildings, especially in the wake of global recession. It is hoped however that the economic crisis does not keep the US skyscraper reputation at bay for long, and that we’ll soon see some more iconic new American skyscrapers in our horizons.
